In fact, there are so many that there is not enough room to present them here. To see more passages, I suggest you refer to your New Testament.

What is a Christian?

Throughout the years, the term Christian has lost its Biblical meaning and has evolved to erroneously mean a person who has high moral values and who is very religious.

Contrary to this popular belief, being religious, following rules, going to church, singing in a church choir, tithing, and all of those other traits associated with being a Christian are actually not what makes a person a Christian. The Bible teaches that the good works we do cannot make us acceptable to God, and that it is only our belief in Jesus Christ that makes us a Christian.

He saved us not because of the good things we did, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins and gave us new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us because of what Jesus Christ our Savior did. Titus 3:5-6

We become Christians when we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior, at which time the Holy Spirit comes to live in us. It is when the Holy Spirit lives in us that we are a Christian.

A Christian is someone who has been born again

Although the term born again has a scary connotation, it describes how we receive Spiritual eternal life.

Jesus replied, “I assure you, unless you are born again, you can never see the Kingdom of God.” John 3:3

But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn! This is not a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan – this rebirth comes from God. John 1:12-13

For you have been born again. Your new life did not come from your earthly parents because the life they gave you will end in death. This new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. 1 Peter 1:23

Christians have the Holy Spirit living in them

But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them are not Christians at all.) Since Christ lives within you, even thought your body will die because of sin, your spirit is alive because you have been made right with God. The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as he raised Christ from the dead, he will give life to your mortal body by the same Spirit living in you. Romans 8:9-11

Because Christians have the Holy Spirit living in them, they know for certain they are going to Heaven.

I write this to you who believe in the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13

A Christian also lives in Christ’s body

Simultaneously, when the Holy Spirit comes to live in us, we become a part of Christ’s body.

The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up only one body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into Christ’s body by one Spirit, and we have all received the same Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:12-13

A Christian believes Christ paid for mankind’s sins

For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. This is the wonderful message he has given us to tell others. 2 Corinthians 5:19

Then he adds, “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds”. Hebrews 10:17

Christians come in all shapes, sizes, and colors

You cannot tell if a person is a Christian by his or her appearance. Some are short, some are tall, some have long hair, and some shave their heads. Many Christians dress conservatively, while others like to exhibit God’s vibrant colors. We are all unique.

Christians are found in all denominations, but not all denominations are Christian. The test as to whether a person is a Christian is his assurance of salvation, not based on his own good deeds, but on his trusting in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

God saved you by his special favor when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none can boast about it. Ephesians 2:8-9
